Hey there, fellow creatives! I’m your resident videographer at BrightMarbles Group, and today, I’m going to let you in on a little secret – the skills that make a good videographer. You see, my journey to videography has been quite an adventure. I started as a graphic designer, dabbled in 2D and 3D animation, and finally found my passion in videography. So, buckle up, and let’s dive into the essential ingredients of that secret sauce!

Storytelling Mastery

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a video can tell an entire story. A good videographer knows how to weave a visual narrative that captivates the audience and delivers a powerful message.

This requires a blend of creativity, empathy, and a knack for understanding what makes a story engaging.
You need to think of the story you want to tell, develop a script, and then bring it to life with the right visuals. Mastering the craft of storytelling through video takes a lot of practice, so be open to experimenting with different techniques. It’ll help you identify what works best for each story you’re shooting. Understanding the audience and the emotions they’re likely to experience while watching the video is another major factor.

Also, don’t be afraid to take risks and try something new. A great storyteller isn’t afraid to step outside of their comfort zone and try something different. By pushing yourself forward and experimenting, you’ll be able to come up with creative and engaging stories that your viewers will love.

BM Insight: Storytelling through videos and motion design are close relatives, with some specific characteristics that set them apart. They’re both applicable to various business contexts, from marketing and web design to UI/UX design. Find out more about the similarities and differences between motion design and UI/UX in the article Fluid Magic: How Motion Design Breathes Life into UI/UX Design, by our seasoned UI/UX designer Marko Vladušić.

Technical Expertise

Skillful videographers should be able to understand the technical aspects of the camera, such as the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and color balance. They should be comfortable with different types of available lenses and select the right one for the desired shot, as well as be familiar with the different types of microphones, and their best uses.

There’s a plethora of gimbals, drones and other gadgets for videography on the market that make shooting much easier. And while all these devices are useful, you can achieve a lot with even the simplest camera if you understand the fundamentals.

To produce great visuals, you need to invest time in studying the basics and putting in the hard work. It’s more important to hone your skills and knowledge than to purchase the latest and greatest tools. Because videography is more than just pointing and shooting. It’s about understanding the intricacies of every single piece of equipment and weaving it together with lighting and audio specifics to produce a stunning video.

As camera technology is evolving rapidly, with new features being added to cameras all the time, good videographer must continuously stay up to date with the latest technology and trends to keep crafting stunning visuals and keep the audience engaged.

Composition and Framing

Much like a painter, a videographer must have an eye for composition. The ability to frame shots effectively and artistically is crucial in capturing the essence of a scene. This skill is honed over time with practice and an understanding of visual aesthetics. Of course, any video will show something, but small things make a difference. The pacing of the video, angles, the choice of close-up shots versus wide shots, and the use of lighting and contrast contribute to the video’s overall impact.

The videographer must consider what elements will draw the viewer in and tell the story in an engaging manner. Through the careful placement of elements within each shot, the videographer can create a compelling visual narrative. And don’t be afraid of errors. Feel free to experiment until you find the best recipe.

Passion and Inspiration

Videographers must have a burning desire to create, experiment, and grow in their craft. This passion fuels creativity, drives improvement, and pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of videography.

When preparing for shooting new videos, it’s important to always look for new sources of inspiration. Whether it’s from movies, commercials, music videos, or any other type of art form, be sure to take the time to explore and find ideas that inspire you. There is no shame in trying to copy someone else’s style, until yours gets better. This can help you get going, giving you a great base to grow from. With time and practice, this style will grow and evolve, to eventually become something that completely reflects your talent and skills.

Equally importantly, understand that failure is part of the creative process. As a matter of fact, it’s a milestone to finding the perfect idea.

Also, sometimes it’s better to take breaks when needed, only to come back with a different point of view. Taking a step away from the project can help to give you a fresh outlook and clear your mind.

This can help to bring in new perspectives and insights that may have otherwise been missed. Overall, the key to creating amazing videos lies in finding inspiration, remaining open to new ideas, and taking the time to relax and explore. With dedication and practice, you can create something that’s truly unique and inspiring.

Editing

Whether you’re a professional or a hobbyist, mastering the art of video editing can elevate your videos to the next level.

Good editing isn’t just about stitching together the right shots, but also about adding effects, music, and motion graphics. An experienced videographer should have a good grasp of editing and post-production software to make the footage look polished. Whether you’re using Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro, software solutions are here to help you edit the footage and create a beautiful finished product. And with some practice and a good eye for detail, you’ll make a stunning video that captivates and engages your audience.

So, if you want to create a captivating video, investing your time and money in learning new skills can be a great way to advance your career and open up more opportunities. Investing in a course on editing or color grading, for example, can be a great way to take your skills to the next level and create more professional-looking videos. This investment in continuous education pays off more in the long run than just piling up new equipment and tools.

This kind of investment (in knowledge and courses) is much better in long term than investing in new equimpent and tools.

Adaptability

A videographer’s work environment can change in the blink of an eye. Whether it’s shooting in the unpredictable weather, working with tight deadlines, or adjusting to client’s specific needs, the ability to adapt and deliver is vital. Flexibility and resourcefulness go a long way in this field.

Furthermore, it’s also important for videographers to be comfortable with interacting with clients, explaining their ideas, and approaching them in a smooth way. Additionally, creativity and the ability to think outside the box are essential, as sometimes things don’t go as planned and videographers must be able to improvise.

Lastly, it is important for videographers to remain focused and remain on task during long shots, while also being able to stay calm under pressure. All these qualities make a successful and reliable videographer.

BM Insight: Being a good videographer also means owning every project you’re working on. It doesn’t refer only to videographers who are team leaders, au contraire. As you keep growing and gaining experience as a video professional, you’ll keep getting more jurisdiction over your work; i.e., if you work at an encouraging company. At BrightMarbles Group Holding, we support, promote, and advocate ownership as one of our core values. Every Mibster, including videographers and other visual artists, has the full creative freedom to individually come up with the best possible solution for every task. Our marketing maven Svetlana Kosić has written about this topic in her article Ownership: The Only Ship that Can Tame a Storm

Communication and Organization

Videography often requires working closely with a team of directors, scriptwriters, actors, and editors. Good communication, coordination, and interpersonal skills make the process smoother and more enjoyable for everyone involved. To be successful in this field, videographers must have excellent communication skills, an ability to coordinate multiple tasks and demands, and the patience to work through any issues that arise.

Be aware that creating a fantastic video takes time and managing time wisely is essential to meeting deadlines and ensuring the final product is speckless. Balancing tasks, setting realistic expectations, and knowing when to delegate are all part of effective time management.

BM Insight: Teamwork is another much appreciated value at our company. While ownership is something we support in individual tasks, we like to discuss, validate, and release the final versions of our software, visual, and marketing solutions as teams. You can read more about our stance on teamwork in the blog post: The Mibsters’ Culture Manifesto: Teamwork

The Final Cut

So, there you have it – these are the ingredients that make a videographer stand out. As I continue to hone my skills and create captivating content for BrightMarbles Group, I’m reminded every day that the pursuit of excellence in videography is an ongoing voyage. And the final advice, something personal: if you ever start losing your passion, or start doubting yourself, accept that it’s all normal part of the process; take a step back, return to the fundamentals, and recall why you started this journey in the first place. And trust me, it’s a journey worth taking!
